I’m considering an upgrade from my current X370 with an 1600x combo setup. At first, I thought the Ryzen 3000 series would work well with the X370 chipset, but it turns out there might be compatibility issues. I need better power delivery for higher frequency memories, which is something I’d like to have if I move to a newer processor. When I checked the X570 options, I was really let down—especially since many boards had limited USB ports and relied on USB 2.0 instead of the newer speeds. The only decent choices seemed to be the Asus Hero or Formula boards, which are quite pricey. Some mid-range X370 models offered USB 3.1 and other nice features, but I’m not sure if those improvements carried over to the X570. For someone with an X570 motherboard, I’d like more PCIe 4.0 support and future-proof options. If you own an X570, what aspects do you value most? What influenced your decision compared to others? And if you have any tips, I’d really appreciate them. Thanks!

Choose your CPU and see how it performs with AMD. If you don’t get a Ryzen 9, the power supply should still work well since the new chips are more efficient. If issues arise, you can always swap to a different motherboard, but the x370 is a safe option. You have nothing to lose.

Because people are willing to pay 200-300$+ for the motherboard just because it's a new chipset. There's little reason to go for X570, mainly only if you want Ryzen 9 (an even then B450 Tomahawk are okay for it with a bit of airflow on VRM) and higher-speed SSDs (which are useless for anything as of now). What's your current board ?

Well, that board has decent VRM, enough for OC'd R7 3700X and even for Ryzen 9 with some airflow. Get a new UEFI update and you're set. That's a perk of AMD platform, you can still use your 3yo motherboard for a new CPUs, and there's Zen 3 and possibly even Zen 4 coming that will still be compatible with it.

You seem to feel a bit biased. Your setup comes with a premium motherboard, but when you compare it to other options, the differences aren't as significant. For instance, the Gigabyte Aorus Elite is now priced between $200 and $220, which is quite competitive. It offers better performance than your current board in several areas—like power delivery and efficiency. Your MSI X370 provides solid VRM design, but the Aorus Elite delivers more power handling and thermal management. Regarding video outputs, if you're investing in a high-end board, it's usually better to pair it with a dedicated graphics card rather than relying on the motherboard's ports. USB versions also matter; USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 2 offer faster speeds, and the Aorus Elite includes multiple ports for flexibility. The PCI-E connections are another point—more lanes and higher speeds can make a big difference. Overall, the upgrade isn't just about cost but about performance and future-proofing.

The cost decreased roughly a year after release. The x570 Aorus is just six months old and has fallen from 220 to 170. These characteristics trade space for additional capabilities, or set expectations for motherboard makers. Some overclocking-friendly traits exist, though not every board needs to be built for it—while still allowing users who wish to.

Perculiar, around August 2018 it must have been fortunate, right? In general, among the X570 models I checked, the Aorus Elite/Pro were the better choices. It just seemed strange giving up some features for a similar price when the goal was to upgrade.
