So I finally managed to get a joystick that lets me enjoy flight sims and other games with precise controls. A while ago, I tried X-Wing Alliance and X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (with the Balance of Power campaigns) through Humble Trove, but I couldn't play them because I didn't have a joystick. Naturally, I was eager to give them another chance.

I attempted to launch Alliance, especially since I know XvT is mainly multiplayer, and it started up with endless processes without any visible outcome. I adjusted the compatibility settings and looked up online for solutions, but nothing came up.

I'm sure the joystick works fine—I used it in flight sims and even Star Wars: Rebel Assault II without issues. I also calibrated it, but it didn't make a difference. The only way to stop it from consuming all my RAM until it ran out was to close the process tree in Task Manager.

Anyone know what might be going wrong or how to fix this? I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit and tried different compatibility options, but nothing worked. I got the game for free through Humble Trove, so I'm hoping to buy it on GOG if I can't get it to run properly.

Execute the XWINGALLIANCE.EXE file instead of the icon version, if that doesn't resolve the issue. If necessary, run the DirectPlayEnable.bat to activate the older technology.
