Is that drive an HDD? If so, thee is a good chance it is a failing. worth checking for that. No, Windows Update doesn't break drives. But typically Windows Update does a lot of drive work, and that might have exposed a drive that faces a manufacture error. If it is faulty, then it should be covered by the manufacture warranty.

I experienced performance problems with my laptop upon receiving it in 2019. If I recall correctly, I had to reinstall Windows 10 multiple times before it became functional. Perhaps clearing the system and starting over would help?
