He shared a trick he used after upgrading: he backed up his old drive with a Windows install and copied everything onto the new drive. It seemed to fix the issue, but now he has two Windows setups on what should be one license. I’m puzzled because Microsoft doesn’t seem to support this method.

It appears disabled on the updated platform, likely because it's tied to a hardware part like a motherboard or component that remains restricted.

Are you checking if the key comes from grey markets? It could be a volume key.
