Are you sure? I’m using Windows 8.1 x86 but intend to switch to 64-bit. I only have a Windows 8 key and DVD; I’m avoiding spending another $100 on 8.1. My approach is to activate Windows 8, then upgrade to 8.1 and install Update 1 before June 13. Do you think the Windows 8.1 update is still available in the store? If not, I’ll stick with 32-bit instead.

Yes, it remains accessible. The system should prompt you about the update each time you start up, isn't it?

You can set up W8 64-bit, move to version 8.1, and enable it using your W8 activation code.
