The VLC media player is not functioning properly when trying to play or stream videos.
I'm uncertain why VLC is starting to avoid playing downloaded videos. It also doesn't stream videos anymore. I've been attempting to download YouTube videos but haven't succeeded since the initial step of playing the video. I reinstalled VLC and configured all correct file extensions, but files already available still work fine. It seems I might have altered a setting by mistake. I've tried watching some YouTube videos about fixing VLC when it doesn't play correctly, but none of the solutions helped. I'm hoping someone can help identify my issues and guide me back to normal operation.
Hi, Grobe. I just attempted your method 1. I didn't locate the .ini file, but I did identify the LUA folder and renamed it "old." After restarting, VLC worked properly—no more issues. I also tried your method 2 installing VLC portable, and it resolved the playback problem as well! Thank you sincerely... I wouldn't have discovered those fixes on my own.
If you think the issue comes from incorrect settings, there are two common solutions:
1. You can delete the VLC settings file, which is likely saved in an ini file on Windows. Search for it online and remove or rename it, then launch the program—it should generate fresh ini files with default settings.
2. You can download a portable version of VLC from portableapps.com (see the link provided). This version doesn’t require an installer; it simply unpacks and you can open the executable with Windows Explorer, usually named VLCportable.exe.
INFO - A portable version keeps all settings in a folder where you placed the program, acting like a backup of the installed VLC without affecting its settings.
Thank you for your quick response, Grobe. I'll test your method and share the outcomes.
