I'm using Debian on an ASUS N550JK laptop without a desktop environment, running i3. The USB hub sometimes disconnects for 3-10 seconds before reconnecting, and this happens across all ports. I've tried every port, but the problem only appears with certain devices. After replacing the hub, it still occurs intermittently. It seems to worsen over time, though rebooting doesn't help. It appears to be more related to heat buildup, but I'm not sure. The issue started when I switched to Debian from Ubuntu and hasn't affected Windows (dual-boot). Some research suggests power-saving features might be involved. It seems to happen while I type, not just when idle. The first hub I used stopped working except for one port, which now causes the same problem on the new one. Both hubs have external power supplies. I'm unsure how to resolve this and hope someone has encountered a similar situation.

It seems likely power handling is the issue. I’d consider turning off USB auto-suspend. It probably stays on by default for many devices, though it might be active for USB hubs. https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_m...utosuspend

You might want to permanently install mageia on a USB drive and check if the issue persists. This could indicate a Debian-specific problem.

It might relate to a recognized kernel bug concerning USB power handling and hubs. Switching to another distribution doesn't fix the underlying issue.

I misunderstood your reply, so I won't suggest changing distros. Instead, try installing another one on a USB and check if the issue persists there. Many problems are tied to particular distros or groups, and we're not sure if it's a kernel issue or specific to Debian. Mageia supports kernel 5.15, making it simple to test 5.10 and 5.15 there. Having a USB with Linux is always useful in case problems arise with your daily system.

I'll examine the power management aspects later. At this time, it appears I've discovered a temporary solution. Connecting my audio interface to its own USB port on the laptop instead of the hub resolves the issue.
