I secured my Windows 10 free upgrade via the notification icon, but after restarting the computer it disappeared. Is this typical behavior once the upgrade is applied?

you need the KB3035583 update, check the bottom right corner where your clock is, there's a little flag icon, click it and download the update, if that didn't work if you're on windows 8.1 go the search feature on the side of the screen, and type in check for update, and then click on check and then download the update
