This represents a major leap forward in WiFi technology with the introduction of WiFi 7. Although companies are launching products branded as “WiFi 7,” the official standard is still under development. The timeline suggests manufacturers aim to be first, driving early adoption and sales. Given Ubiquiti’s approach, it seems likely this capability will be released soon or already available in beta versions. The current speeds are impressive, especially if machine learning optimization is implemented. Overall, progress appears encouraging. For high-density environments, the LR and Enterprise models generally deliver better results, while the Lite variant offers a good balance of cost and performance for residential use.
I manage to achieve about 1.6Gbit using WiFi 6 at 160Mhz on my Steam Deck OLED. The challenge is that it doesn’t really matter in practice because Steam’s workload is mostly CPU-heavy, so it usually caps around 600Mbit. I’m fortunate since I’m connected to an enterprise AP, which means I never faced WiFi speed issues with the OLED—though I did notice it sometimes didn’t auto-reconnect after sleep. In reality, the OLED behaves consistently. Moving toward WiFi 7 is at best early beta, acting more like a trial version until official release.
