I thought about swapping the Athlon 200GE for something better. The main problem was always whether they were in stock and offered at fair prices. If they were consistently available at MSRP, they’d have been great value options. Even then, they didn’t stand out much from a budget standpoint. Paying a little more for a Ryzen 3 usually paid off—especially compared to getting a Ryzen 5. The 3000G model also had its quirks; it’s a Zen part, not even Zen+, which makes the name confusing. Some folks online and on Reddit wonder if a 3000G is superior to other Ryzen models because of its newer label, but that’s just a naming issue. Overall, the Athlon parts had their place, but they never became a go-to for many buyers.

Interestingly, the 1400 at the time of the 2000 series launch was quite affordable—just 55€ new, which was a great deal for a high-end i7 6700 and a mid-range b350 tomahawk. Many people I know upgraded their systems when their i5s weren’t keeping up. Yet in reality, the only CPUs that will be remembered are the Ryzen 1700 or 5800X3D. The first affordable consumer model with eight cores really changed things, and the 5800X3D clearly shows just how significant its impact was.

This was why I highlighted gaming and FP compute. Productivity might align well with Cinebench results. Cores would scale more easily. Threads (HT/SMT) could add roughly a 30% boost for Cinebench. I observed 50% in the Ryzen Blender test, though at that time the main Blender code wasn't leveraging SIMD efficiently—this could change now. My focus was on Skylake versus Zen 1, as Ryzen launched while Skylake models were still relevant. In practice, Skylake to Comet Lake was essentially the same microarchitecture. If clocks are comparable and IPC isn't the limiting factor, we might see around 2x performance. Three times seems ambitious but could work if the instruction mix is right.
