The top-end PC abruptly stopped working during a game of RDR2 for the first time.
In short, the title explains what’s happening. Recently, my computer has started crashing while playing Red Dead Redemption 2. The screen goes black, fans speed up to 200%, and an error sound plays. Sometimes the audio continues for a while. This hasn’t happened before—no changes were made to the PC or drivers. Other games work fine, and temperatures seem normal. The GPU is underclocked due to past issues, which caused errors but not this current problem. Can anyone assist?
After another crash, I receive this alert when launching the game:
ERR_GFX_D3D_DEFERRED_MEM
Out of memory. Please reboot, close other programs and make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements. For more details, visit:

I’m confident my PC satisfies the necessary conditions.
We will need more information.
Full component list with make/model/variant details, along with age of the build, OS version and temp details.
In addition, you might check whether the RDR2 game configurations remain the same as before, since a change in driver could affect stability.
Everything is quite current! I review those components regularly. Yet, despite being outdated, they functioned well with the "outdated" drivers. Why would this shift occur?
The setup appears effective. Considering the previous error, it seems VRAM saturation likely occurred during a load or activity surge, possibly from an overlay or shader cache overload. I'm curious to see if this issue can be reproduced when just the game is running without any additional or background applications.
Well, it happened again. Now with a recording, but by looking at the data in Afterburner, I don't see anything really out of the ordinary.
This was also without any background apps open.

I really have no clue why this is suddenly happening. Any ideas on software I can monitor this with?
I would attempt to reinstall the newest graphics driver after removing them using DDU. I would then verify that all configurations are set to their defaults with the graphics card and perform a test. If problems persist, try raising the voltage on the graphics card and adjusting the core clock offset and memory settings further -100 or -250, -500. Retest.
Regardless of how strong your GPU is, the game will still fail.
Using Vulkan API in the game will cause VRAM usage to increase continuously, never decreasing. Once it hits the full capacity, the game crashes and displays a memory shortage message.
The issue lies with the game, not your hardware.
Solutions:
1) Continue using Vulkan but turn off ReBar in your BIOS settings (it may appear as S.A.M, C.A.M, or ReBar). This helps the game run smoothly without overusing VRAM. Other games might still be affected.
2) Switch to DirectX 12 API in the settings. This can cause stutters that a mod called "Stutter Fix" for Nexus can fix. I suggest this option based on my experience.
