Hey there! For someone new to Linux, a lightweight distribution like Lubuntu or Xubuntu would be a great start. They’re user-friendly and perfect for experimenting.

An Ubuntu-based version will make a great educator. Setting it up is simple and there’s a big community available for support.

Thanks for the ideas! It seems Linux Mint Mate is built on top of Ubuntu, making it a good choice for older hardware. Would you like to explore that option or go with Ubuntu instead?

Mint is Ubuntu enhanced with useful features and a few quirky issues I've faced. It was once my favorite, though I'm not sure it works perfectly on laptops—just give it a shot!
