I've been pairing Malware Bytes with Windows Defender. You mentioned Windows Defender isn't up to par, so you're looking for alternatives. Here are some solid options to consider:

I believe we really need some improvement here, or we should consider recommending software in general. This question comes up too often. The thread should ideally be a sticky post, but it’s important to review it for errors first. On the other hand: for free antivirus protection, you’d likely want Avira or Bitdefender. Bitdefender is lighter on resources, though it offers fewer customization options. If you prefer something paid, Kaspersky or Avira would be better choices. I’d probably pick Kaspersky because their team has uncovered many security vulnerabilities in the past. You might also look into AVTEST, an independent company that rates antivirus programs. (Bitdefender and Kaspersky are currently the top two). Also, consider scanning your computer weekly—or however long you’re comfortable with—using Malwarebytes. Just remember, Malwarebytes isn’t an antivirus itself; it should only be used as a scanner. Avoid accepting its trial and turn it off at startup.

I've relied on ESET for many years; it stands out as one of the least disruptive tools, requiring minimal system power.
