He’s managing his Mac well and can access our FreeNAS system. The main issue is that while the operating system recognizes it as a backup drive, Time Machine isn’t working. All configurations allow third-party backup tools to use the drive, but they’re just free trials downloaded for testing purposes. Could there be something preventing the time machine from connecting?

Time Machine drives need to be saved in HFS+ format, also known as Mac OS Extended Journaled. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201250
