Hello everyone, I’ve been experiencing unexpected crashes on my desktop for some time now. Most often, within the first hour after turning on the PC, the screen goes black and the monitor starts cycling through inputs as though there’s no signal. I can still hear audio from my headset for a short time before the headset and other devices shut down completely. The computer stays powered but is entirely unresponsive, so I have to force it off. Occasionally, instead of losing the signal, the system freezes with the image stuck on the screen. This usually happens after closing a game, watching YouTube or Twitch, or when waking up from sleep.

The problem becomes more common when using two monitors. I used a single monitor for several weeks without any issues. A few days later, after reconnecting the second monitor, the crashes returned. Switching back to one monitor helped but didn’t fully solve the issue. I’ve tried different monitors and cables, and even performed a clean Windows reinstall, but the problem still persists.

My setup is a ~4–5 year-old desktop running Windows, with a Ryzen 5 CPU, GTX 1660 GPU, 16 GB RAM, and I haven’t changed the thermal paste. Based on the symptoms—black screen/no signal first, audio cutting in, mostly under low load—I wonder if this points more toward a GPU problem, power supply instability, or something else. Any suggestions on what to test next would be really helpful.

Thanks a lot!

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
My setup is a ~4–5 year old desktop running Windows, Ryzen 5 CPU, GTX 1660 GPU, 16 GB RAM,.
Please list the specs to your build like so:
CPU:
CPU cooler:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:
include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time. I'm assuming the PSU's 5 years old at the time of writing?
I’ve already done a clean Windows reinstall, but the problem persists.
Where did you source the installer for the OS? Did you install the OS in offline mode?
