I was setting up a game on my laptop running Windows 10 when it suddenly froze and displayed a blank blue screen. After shutting it down forcefully, I restarted it. Windows attempted to run chkdsk on the C drive, which is an NVMe SSD. I chose to cancel the process and then checked the SSD health, which showed it was fine. I proceeded with chkdsk on C: through the disk properties, and some errors were detected. I was prompted to restart again, which resolved the issues and allowed Windows to start normally. The chkdsk log is available at the provided link. In the log, Stage 2 mentioned processing certain .txt files, likely from a game that wasn’t the one being installed. There were also orphaned files present, possibly related to the game installation. The Windows file system appeared to be repaired. I ran a full system restore with DISM and then executed SFC /ScanNow, which fixed minor files. The blank blue screen usually occurs during login, but this incident happened while using the PC. Could it be a Windows problem or a hardware fault?

Dism /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth SFC /ScanNow This trio of commands is often cited by Windows support experts. For bluescreen issues, consider these three main possibilities: faulty drivers, failing HDD/SSD, or a corrupted Windows installation. Verify if any games were recently installed with outdated drivers—especially those relying on older tech like PhysX. Use diagnostic tools such as Crystaldisk or HDTune to assess your hard drives. Also, ensure you’re running the latest Windows updates. If none of these work, it may be time to back up your data and reinstall the OS.

I completed the restore of health and sfc after the issue occurred. No problems arose. I didn't encounter a standard BSOD; instead, I saw a blank blue screen with no text. I reviewed the Event Viewer, which indicated an unexpected shutdown. Everything seemed normal, and I didn't make any updates. My laptop has both an NVMe SSD and an HDD, both functioning properly. I installed the Nvidia driver 537.58 on October 2023, and there had been no issues for six months. The game didn't require any drivers, and it appears my luck was on my side during the installation. I ran memory tests yesterday—four passes in memtest86, one in Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Alienware diagnostics. No errors were detected, so my hardware seems intact. It might have been a random accident caused by the Nvidia driver or a Windows bug. The driver can sometimes behave unpredictably. For instance, when I switched to a different Nvidia driver, it crashed once and restarted shortly after Windows booted. I updated the driver to 537.58 after the incident. Also, see the Reddit thread about a similar issue with a blank blue screen after a driver update. Another user reported a similar experience after updating to driver 551.86, possibly due to a Windows bug. Both blank screens occurred when switching on the PC. Please check the forum post by johnbl for more details. What are your thoughts?
