I’m really struggling and need some guidance right now. I just wanted to confirm everything was clear before you asked. A few months back, I assembled my ideal gaming rig and could handle both schoolwork and games. After finishing a last-minute assignment, I played Star Wars Squadrons on a high-end 2K monitor with all settings at maximum. For a while it worked perfectly—until the screens went dark and the game ended. After checking and restarting, I found my GPU fans weren’t spinning, while the case fans were running at the lowest speed. When I opened L-Connect 3, it asked for admin permissions, which usually happens on first login but seems to have been missed. Now my hardware has been offline for hours. Once I got back in, temperatures were dangerously high—around 190°F. I turned everything off, opened the case, and tried cooling fans, but nothing changed. After inspecting the next day, there was no visible damage. When I restarted L-Connect and set fans to full speed, everything ran smoothly. However, my GPU temps kept spiking near 100%. I shut it down, opened the case, and installed a fan controller. The following day I checked again—temperatures were normal, and the game started without issues. But once I began playing Squadrons, screens flickered black briefly, then returned to home screen and closed. Task manager showed my GPU using almost all power even when idle. I tried updating drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling, using all GPU tools, overclocking, and resetting everything to factory settings. Eventually, I got the idle temps back to normal, but performance dropped sharply during gameplay—screen flickering, stuttering, and low frame rates. Squadrons became unplayable, even Doom Eternal slowed to 30 FPS. I’m at my breaking point and really need help. No extreme overclocking has been done; my RAM is at 3000 MHz. I can’t boot with XMP enabled, but a minor tweak improved it. I’m planning more serious adjustments after the semester ends, but for now, I’m worried about both my hardware and my studies.
Parts needed:
- EVGA Precision X1
- GeForce Experience
- L-Connect 3 fan control app
- NVIDIA Control Panel
- RAM speed set to 3000 MHz
I just completed the uninstallation and reinstallation process. I experimented with relocating my power supply to have its own connection, separating it from monitors and speakers. I also tried booting in safe mode and using Malwarebytes. The main problem was in Star Wars: Squadron, where Doom Eternal struggled at low frames. After reorganizing the setup and adjusting settings, all other games worked smoothly except Squadrons which kept freezing. The issue turned out to be a volumetric graphics setting in the game, used for visual effects like fog and clouds. The Yavin mission was particularly affected because it’s set on a red gas giant with heavy reliance on those graphics options. Changing the setting from ultra to medium fixed everything. I suspect my old Logitech G19 keyboard also contributed—its power draw was too high when plugged into the same strip, causing throttling under load. Having separate outlets for my PC, monitors, TV, and peripherals helped resolve many of the problems.
