What does it mean for a system to be compatible? Most SATA controllers don’t support this setup, especially not a Dell desktop.

The model number and make of this Dell computer are provided. You need to use an adapter because you're connecting the drive via the Power Cable from the PSU and the data cable directly to the SATA port on the motherboard. Begin the setup by pressing F2 on the Dell Splash screen to enter Setup (Bios). Check System Information; if the drive isn't listed, there may be an adapter problem. Test another drive—if it works on a different machine but not here, it could be faulty.

It's an OptiPlex 790 SFF model and I'm using an adapter since the hard drive uses SAS but I only have SATA ports. The BIOS is locked, but I managed to unlock it on Friday.

These drives perform poorly with regular Dell systems. They're meant for RAID setups on Workstations or Servers.
