Hi everyone, I've just set up a new system (refer to the parts list below). It won't work if I add another GPU to the motherboard. The system runs smoothly when only the main GPU is powered and the second GPU's PCIe cables are removed. For clarity, I'm considering converting it into a Hackintosh, which is why I'm using the second GPU. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Have you attempted to resolve the problem through BIOS settings? It's conceivable the computer isn't starting properly because the BIOS isn't identifying the main display source. Once you set the right PCI slot for the primary GPU, it should boot, and afterward you can switch to the secondary card for a dual-boot setup on Hackintosh

I just tested it too, changed the graphics settings to PEG Slot and PCIE, but nothing worked. Could there be something I’m overlooking?

It seems the PCI lane count might be reaching its limit. Have you tried unplugging two SSDs? If correct, you have two 500GB and a 2TB drive—consider booting using just the boot SSD and two GPUs. I don’t see a reason a PC wouldn’t work with two GPUs in the NVidia control panel, since you can pick which card runs CUDA. I’m puzzled as to why Windows would struggle to start with two AMD cards.

I tested it after removing two drives, but I doubt it’s limited by PCIe lanes because the Z790 supports 20 PCIe lanes—12 for SSDs and 4 for the GPU.

Main GPU requires 16 lanes, leaving only 4 available. A second GPU will default to 8 PCIe lanes each, still resulting in 16 lanes overall, but only 4 PCIe slots remain for the boot drive. Other SSDs should be connected via the chipset or they’ll disable SATA to secure the needed lanes. Removing drives not needed for booting is optional—just to test if the PC starts with both GPUs installed.

The second GPU would operate outside the chipset lanes, using its own set of CPU lanes instead. The 16x slot is only configured for 4x connections.

4 by 4 equals 16. It can be tricky to understand, but the primary PCI slot is usually a 16-lane port, often labeled as x4. This guide will clarify things for you. https://www.techiesmag.com/topics/how-ma...a-gpu-use/

For the second GPU’s port, the motherboard guide indicates it only works in x4 mode, and examining the slot reveals the 16x connector lacks pins throughout its length.

the first PCI expansion slot supports PCI Gen 5 while the final slot is designated for the second GPU. the three smaller slots in between accommodate additional SSDs or other cards requiring a reinforced top slot next to the CPU, which should house your main GPU. the bottommost slot is intended for the secondary GPU in a dual-boot hackintosh setup, possibly located in the middle slot. https://latestintech.com/asus-prime-z790...ifications 1 Operating System%3A Windows 11,Windows 10,7200%2B 5 Form Factor%3A ATX (30.5 x 24.4cm)
