They've verified my concerns about being misled. It seems I was led to believe certain claims were unfounded or incorrect, particularly regarding recent AMD processors. Thank you for your responses. Another person is already assembling a setup for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop first, with gaming and streaming as secondary priorities. Because the initial parts list was made before the Ryzen 5000 era, I asked for guidance on how the 5800X and 5900X performed in productivity (especially based on Puget's tests) and gaming versus the 10900K that was originally selected. In short, the main reason Intel was picked over AMD came from understanding their needs—without deep technical insight, all I could think of was basic setup. This is unfamiliar territory for me since I've built with both systems (though I started with FX-6200 in Bulldozer mode). I can't say I'd change anything. Still, this 'friend' also mentioned AMD required faster memory to match Intel's performance, their CPUs had many driver problems, they spent $220 on an SSD and $450 on 32GB Corsair Dominator Platinums (again, for a production build). Based on my background, I usually go with a kit that fits the maximum capacity of my CPU. I set the appropriate profile in the BIOS and everything went smoothly. However, I haven’t pushed memory too hard, and I began personal builds about nine years ago (including FX-6200, FX-8350, Ryzen 1600X, and Ryzen 5900X). For other users with Intel CPUs, I’ve followed the same approach without any problems.

The only missing aspect of the Ryzen is the AVX instructions. While AMD components often need extra adjustments compared to Intel ones for optimal results, a stable build typically avoids K-series CPUs altogether. You'd usually opt for non-K/non-F/non-KF i7 models instead. Choosing a K CPU is generally reserved for gaming setups. Previously, some OEMs opted for K parts over 1-CPU Xeon systems mainly to reduce memory costs. Since Ryzen chips don’t include integrated graphics, they fall behind for software relying on the iGPU (such as encoders or decoders), unless you have a dedicated GPU like GTX/RTX. Historically, AMD parts could underperform Intel ones in specific tasks due to design compromises, but since the K6 line was solid, AMD has largely improved. This is partly because many Ryzen parts were aimed at budget builds and competing with i3 models. I wouldn’t recommend using an A-series APU from AMD for professional work like Photoshop unless you have a dedicated GPU. For AMD configurations, updating chipset drivers is crucial—otherwise hardware may fail outright. Intel remains more reliable as long as you’re using a recent OS version. Only the R9 models are experiencing issues. The 5600x costs around 75% more than its MSRP, while the 5800x matches the MSRP.

It seems you're pointing out the issue of using old information or not staying updated. Back then, AMD processors were known to be quite sensitive, but now they generally function smoothly.

If this was the logic they were using (they truly needed AVX), then I would have fully grasped it. A similar approach aiming for a stable configuration but with a K-series and memory focused on overclocking left me puzzled. This setup did feature a dedicated GPU (3070 or 3080 target), otherwise I would have accepted that point too. Everyone should agree here—I didn’t see how the friend’s reasons against AMD could relate to anything Ryzen offers, particularly not for the 5800X or 5900X given their price. That’s helpful to know—I’ve been lucky so far not to run into this issue. But I’ll remember it. Thanks!

I've been using AMD for over five years now. If you have a Ryzen 5000, you can get faster RAM without sacrificing performance. For matching Intel speeds, you'd need slower RAM. Try the Ryzen 5600x with a friend and see how their results compare.
