I wasn't able to shift it using the screw down, which seems acceptable.

Hi, the problem you mentioned occurred with one ASUS notebook bought from our store. After sending it back for an RMA, they found an issue with the motherboard and replaced it. We tested various SSDs, but the same issue persisted—SSD would disconnect and cause freezes. You might try creating a bootable Windows USB drive to test from there. Freezing should stop, allowing you to check if the SSD disconnected in that environment. If it does, consider returning it for an RMA while still under warranty. Hope this helps.

I’m hoping I won’t need to return the entire laptop. It seems the drive is already in a secondary position, so I doubt a live USB would affect the issue.

Yes, if it were secondary, a live Windows setup wouldn't matter. Explorer is designed to work when the system disk unexpectedly disconnects, allowing access to the disk and displaying file details so missing disks can trigger such issues. Have you reviewed the Event Viewer and Windows logs for any specific errors, warnings, or critical messages around that time in application and system maps?

The system restarted unexpectedly after a clean shutdown attempt, and this isn’t the root issue.

It looks like the lock is very tight and no logs are being recorded. You might want to run memtest86 to check if the RAM is functioning properly. There was a problem a couple of years ago where a notebook worked normally until copying files to USB caused it to lock up. It turned out the RAM was faulty. You could have tried updating the BIOS and chipset drivers, or use Dell’s diagnostic tool at https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-hr...or-servers.

I completed the memory and disk checks in both supportassist and pre-boot diagnostics; they succeeded. Memtest86 also passed. I plan to run memtest86 overnight. If no errors appear, what’s your guess on the likely issue? Could it be the RAM or the drive? Might the connection port be faulty? I can swap the drives and compare performance with the main drive in a different slot. Also, how often did this occur on the ASUS model? Edited May 18, 2022 by Craftyawesome
