The computer starts up but the connection point appears damaged (memory channel not functioning, Strix B550-E model).
Examine the gold fingers in the socket; some are damaged and a few appear broken. You'll need to either replace the socket, work with it as it is, or discard the board. Unless you have the right tools and expertise, fixing this yourself isn't advisable. Fortunately, nearby shops can handle it—check your location or ask a local PC shop if anyone can assist.
i thought that but the motherboard is fairly new—only two years old, same for the cpu—and i haven’t made any mistakes with it. I’m not sure how a socket could be damaged yet still work. Also, the memory channel worked until i reinserted the cpu three days ago. Amd asked for the serial number because my cpu is acting odd, and when i sent it from gmail, the photo looked blurry/compressed. But after downloading it, everything was clear and the serial number was perfectly visible. My cpu was already in my hand when amd replied saying it was fine.
Did you purchase it new or secondhand? Any damage can happen at any moment, so age isn't the main concern... But it is. It raises the chance something will fail—it's Murphy's law in action here. As mentioned, you'll need to replace the socket for it to function properly again.
It's unclear if the issue lies with the socket since the channel has functioned before.
And I can tell you it is, there is no way you can have that much and kind of damage down in the socket without affecting something. Even if it had worked before there is always that one instant in time it will fail. I also hate to break it to you but when you said you got it from Amazon, that tells me alot. They've been known before to take something back that's defective/damaged, rebox it and sell it as new all over again. As for the damage in the socket, it looks like someone was digging down in the socket holes with something or maybe had tried to jam a chip into it with alot of force due to bent pins on the chip, thinking if they pushed hard enough it would pop in and work..... I mean who knows? Either way that board has been abused or tampered with in the past and the problem with it remains as is with the same fix required.
