I recently put in Skyrim two days ago and started it. It automatically chose the "High" graphics setting. My system specs are an i5-4590, R9 390, with 8GB of RAM. I was hoping for something more powerful like "Ultra." I figured I could adjust it myself. Then I came across a Reddit thread and needed some clarification.

It seems like you're wondering if there could be an issue with your PC, such as driver or hardware problems, that might have affected its performance.

Skyrim struggles to configure settings effectively on its own, often requiring manual adjustments even when using the same hardware across several installations.

The system is functioning properly. Game settings auto-detection is unreliable. Regardless of the default, always adjust manually.

Is GeForce Experience popular among users? Same as others say.

honestly, for all the hate geforce experience is getting for their auto settings... i think trough all the games i've played maybe one detected ideal settings at least semi decently, and then i went in to minmax to a smooth 60 fps EDIT: that includes in-game autodetect settings.

I rarely handle it except during rare ShadowPlay sessions. I usually like adjusting the settings on my own.

When automatic options fail, stick to manual adjustments. If a setting suggests medium, override it with higher or lower values to achieve the desired performance. Ignore defaults—they often don’t work.
