Hey everyone, I'm thinking about the shift from DDR4 to DDR5 and wondering what changes that means. Which parts need updating for a DDR5 setup? For example, does a 5900X require an upgrade to run DDR5?
New motherboard and processor components are required. I understand the rumor about AMD developing AM5 for DDR5 and upcoming CPUs. Intel is probably planning to match with socket 1700 (I think). At the very least, you’ll need a replacement board because DDR4 and DDR5 have different pin configurations.
You need to purchase a new CPU and motherboard. Choosing DDR5 solely because it’s newer than DDR4 isn’t a solid justification—upgrading in that case wouldn’t be wise.
Like the transition from DDR3 to DDR4, this should likely involve a different socket design on both AMD and Intel systems. It’s possible we’ll find some motherboards with dual support for DDR3 and DDR4. You may need to upgrade to a new motherboard and processor.
This might explain why certain motherboards included several versions of RAM.
I believe the Sky Lake MB with DDR3 faced some issues, which I've heard about. I own the motherboard but had a pin damage and didn't test my 66ook. The extra DDR RAM is on my dad's side, so that might be the reason.
