I begin this because I’m unsure how many are aware of this. There’s a method to hide web results in Windows search. It’s a bit awkward (using a registry change), but it functions for those who truly need it. It isn’t the optimal fix, and I hope Windows offered a clear option to disable it, even if it was turned on by default. Based on Windows 10 version 20H2, here’s how:
1. Open the Start menu
2. Type "regedit"
3. Launch the Registry Editor
4. Navigate to: "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer"
5. At the top, click Edit → New → DWORD (32-bit) value and name it "DisableSearchBoxSuggestions"
6. After saving the DWORD, double-click it or right-click and choose "Modify," setting its value to 1
7. Log out and back in; search results should stop showing web suggestions, though settings and programs will remain visible. You’ll need UAC access, so this might not work on business devices.
An option was previously available, but it was deleted or broken during an update.
What operating system version are you running? I understand those older versions (like the ones from the early 2000s) don’t support it. You can try making the folder if it’s missing in 20H2, then proceed with the instructions. If you’re not using the latest Windows (whatever that means), go to Windows/Current Version/Search. Then set Dword "BingSearchEnabled" to 0, and create Dword "CortanaConsent" with value 0. If needed, flip it back to 1. I followed this guide: https://www.howtogeek.com/224159/how-to-...tart-menu/
You're welcome! It sounds like the previous fix helped. Your internet should now be more stable when opening the Start menu.
Hello! It wasn’t too difficult to locate the information—I just searched online and found several results. Still, I thought it would be helpful to share it more clearly. I also wish there was an obvious option to disable it, as it seems they once had one but later removed it when they realized it didn’t solve a real issue and only added more confusion.
