I placed the order for a Ryzen 5950x CPU to swap out my old 5600x, which had performed perfectly for years. It looks like the MSI board isn't delivering power well, as I saw some discussions online. I checked Geekbench with the computer panel open to rule out overheating issues. The peak temperature recorded was 86.5°C for the first chip, and 83°C for the second. In the "Temperatures" section, 77°C was noted as the maximum for the CPU. I believe the low multicore score suggests the motherboard and its VRM setup might be restricting performance rather than the CPU itself.
Welcome to the forum. How do you use this PC? It's hard to find a good reason to buy a 5950x in June 2024, except maybe for the 5700x3D or a Ryzen 7000. I'd prefer Cinebench for benchmarks since more people use it as a reference. HWMonitor is generally unreliable, particularly for Ryzen processors. HWiNFO remains the typical choice.
It’s not ideal, yet the heatsinks are decent enough to handle basic tests like GeekBench or Cinebench without throttling. There’s probably another factor at play. If the readings seem correct, it suggests either overheating or software issues since it’s reaching maximum temperature. This could mean the system is throttling or background processes are consuming all six cores. It might be a budget model, but given the 5900XT’s recent release, it seems hard to dismiss.
In my country the lowest cost for 5700X3D is currently 239€ plus shipping. I purchased this model for 286€ including shipping, which makes me question the decision since I don’t work creatively with it. For more demanding tasks, an X3D CPU would have been more suitable. I’ve heard the Windows 11 scheduler can cause issues with Ryzen 9 processors, so I’m trying to update chipset drivers to see if it improves things. The cheapest price for 5950X online is about 369€, so I might consider selling the one I bought. I’m unsure how returning to Amazon would work without restocking fees or high shipping charges.
I experienced poor gaming performance on my 5950X, often stuttering. Switching to the 7800X3D made most games run smoothly, which is what I expected for a 5700X3D. However, I think my CPU might have been faulty from the beginning—it consistently showed high SoC current and eventually stopped. This could have affected its performance. I haven’t tried gaming on my replacement yet.
I played a short session in Doom Eternal's Horde mode. The experience felt fluid, though the system ran hot. Cinebench 2024 Multicore score came in at 1244, which I think isn't high enough for this particular CPU.
Can't get it back. It doesn't really improve gaming at all from a 5600x perspective—it's just more Zen3 cores, which won't make much difference. The MC score you found online is typical for PBO. If you set CO to -20 and enable the +200 Boost Override, it should help, provided the board can handle it.
Perhaps, I bought it from Amazon.de and I'm not based in Germany. Besides likely high shipping charges, I might have to cover restocking fees, etc. I'm unsure if the CPU-Z benchmark matters at all, but I've attached a screenshot from my tests.
