Hi, I'm currently testing an Insider Build of W11 and the tool I usually relied on for CPU/case fan settings isn't functioning. I looked for alternatives and switched to FanControl. While setting up a standard profile and a "noFan" mode, today my PC started with the nofan setting and didn't spin any fans at all. The GPU fan is automatically managed by Afterburner, which made it hard to hear that the case or CPU fans weren't running. Eventually I noticed a slight warmth but didn't connect it to me. When performance dropped very low, I checked Afterburner-OSD and saw the CPU temperature at 112°C. I was surprised because that seemed too high, but I still verified if the exhaust area was unusually warm. Obviously, it was quite hot and likely caused the smell I felt earlier. Right after, I stopped the game and set all fans to maximum, but I'm still puzzled why the PC didn't shut down on its own. Before anyone suggests anything, yes, I normally have an audio alert for overheating, but I forgot to install it during my recent Windows update. Any advice on further troubleshooting besides using fans?
Hello! It's great that it didn't stop working. Consider taking out the cooler and applying some thermal paste for better performance. Also, ensure proper ventilation and keep the fans clear of dust. Let me know if you need more help!
Normally, this wouldn't happen. I guess that the Insider Build somehow prevents some kind of BIOS-Windows communication, as the Motherboard utilities dont work right now. Even the BIOS fan-curve doesnt do anything right now. Yeah, the board was the cheapest B450 board with an M.2 Slot. That's why I bought it. Apart from this occasion, there never was a reason to regret cheaping out on the mobo. I'm wondering why it didn't shut off too. Why I did some testing boots while assembling the PC, it even shut off at 90°C (while there was not cooler installed). I guess it's some problem with the Motherboard and the Insider Preview. When the fans are spinning, there's plenty airflow. The cause for the high temperature was definitely the non-existence of a fan curve above 0% fan duty.
That's what I find confusing when others say "it's safe, the CPU shuts down automatically before overheating."… Except it might not work if the setting is left on by default in the BIOS… (like with my MSI board…)
It depends on the motherboard and BIOS—probably on my system. Yeah... it doesn’t make much sense.
It seems the feature isn’t available in the BIOS or the 44-page manual. Likely it would power off under normal conditions, but the issue might be linked to the Insider build.
