Yesterday I accessed fortnight and tried to stay idle for ten minutes. Then I noticed a pop noise, the GPU indicator disappeared, the fans ceased operation, and the screens went dark. The system became stuck in a poor boot cycle, which I resolved by powering down the PSU.
During troubleshooting:
- The PC boots normally with integrated graphics removed.
- No boot when inserting the GPU into another PCIe slot.
- Connected GPU to a separate PSU and jump started it—no fans or lights.
I’ve faced these problems for about six months now. Initially, the issue began with black screen and excessive fan noise, requiring a forced shutdown. Once the problem stopped, I replaced the power supply and everything worked again. Other games function properly at high graphics settings.
Any suggestions? Could this have been a slowdown over time? Should I try fixing it or should I consider replacing the card or building a new system since it’s aging? I previously owned an RTX 2060.

How long has this unit been in use? What was its previous power source before the RX 6800? The RTX 2060?
You didn’t specify the case model or fan orientation. Were the GPU temperatures elevated prior to the issue?

Only your repair center can accurately assess the damage and required repairs. If it’s memory issues, a new card is advisable. For PCB-level problems on the GPU, a donor GPU with compatible parts could assist.
If the GPU has surpassed its warranty, you might disassemble it to check for any faults such as overheating, burning, or structural damage.
