I possess an 8GB memory unit originally from 2018 on my ThinkPad X1 Extreme with i5 processor. Looking for a compatible 8GB unit to replace the second slot. Any suggestions? The original chip is a Samsung model, but I haven’t opened the laptop yet.

You’ll need the memory speed and timing details from the device. Best to specify the make, model, and even the laptop’s QVL entry.

If it runs slower than the other option, memory performance would drop, and any added speed wouldn’t matter.

The notebook uses a Micron SODIMM DDR4 8GB at 2666MHz. There are no faster RAM options available, as 2666MHz is the maximum supported speed.
