The reboot of "Alone in the Dark" has been officially revealed by THQ.
Hello,
It seems that the publisher "THQ Nordic" and the developer "Pieces Interactive" (Sweden) have made an announcement about
Alone in the Dark, a revival of the third-person survival horror series for PC (available on Steam) and also for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. No specific release date was given, but development began in late 2019 and the project remains in the alpha phase.
I haven’t played the original 1992 title, yet this new version has reshaped the "Horror" genre. Alone in the Dark is recognized as a pioneering survival horror title, often cited among the earliest and most impactful entries in the genre.
Today’s reveal at THQ Nordic’s digital event introduced the updated game as a reinterpretation of the 1990s survival horror trilogy, retaining its characters, settings, and themes. A teaser titled “Grace in the Dark” will be available for play during Gamescom 2022 (August 24–28).
Main characters Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood return, each narrating their own version of the story. The plot follows Emily searching for her missing uncle with private investigator Edward Carnby, leading them to Derceto—a place for those suffering from mental exhaustion—where they face bizarre inhabitants, mysterious portals, and formidable foes.
Summary of key points:
- A fresh take on the 90s horror classic
- Combines combat, puzzles, exploration, and narrative
- Integrates original characters and settings from the original trilogy
- Set in a gothic American setting with noir and Lovecraftian influences
- Offers a psychological depth crafted by Mikael Hedberg

I've only played one version of Alone in the Dark, probably the 2008 release. It had decent lighting effects, but the movement and aiming didn't impress much, and the driving was even more problematic. I wasn't particularly interested in the gameplay itself, which included some unusual platforming sections and dodging these black spikes that popped up everywhere. The 2008 edition is an Atari title, and THQ Nordic seems to be trying to improve upon it with better graphics and controls. I also appreciate the trailer's appearance and the overall potential of the game.
In the world of newest horror titles, DEAD SPACE stands out above all. Even RE: Village and "The Evil Within 1 and 2" capture the essence of fear. I recently purchased EVIL DEAD: The game on Epic games store. It features a concise single-player campaign with only five levels, yet it doesn't match the horror intensity other games bring to the genre. Still, the combat feels rewarding and can be challenging at times. I also appreciate its visuals and the immersive atmosphere.
Keep in mind though, Dead Space was a concept led by Glen Schofield (now lead for Striking Distance), and because all EA is focusing on having their Motive Studio team recreate the original, it suggests the true horror throne could soon fall to The Calisto Protocol.
Yes, I'm familiar with the upcoming 'The Calisto Protocol' horror game. From all the leaks, teasers, videos, and screenshots, it seems to have a strong potential. I'm curious whether they'll actually launch it on schedule? The rumored release date is December 2, 2022. It's unclear if Callisto Protocol will truly surpass Dead Space in the horror genre, but we'll find out once it's available.
If given a decision between a postponement and numerous issues at launch, I would prefer to delay personally.
Discussing the Callisto protocol, some updated information has come to light regarding the Ray Tracing capabilities. Reports suggest that enhanced shadow and reflection effects will be included in the game. During an interview with IGN, Mark James, the Chief Technical Officer of Striking Distance Studios, mentioned hybrid ray-traced shadows would be implemented. Furthermore, Techradar reported that reflections for character eyes will also be ray-traced. It seems the game will support both shadow and reflection enhancements on PC. Additionally, it is expected to incorporate AI-upscaling technologies such as AMD’s FSR 2.0 or NVIDIA’s DLSS. The engine choice remains Unreal Engine 4, rather than the newer version. This update likely represents a significant modification of the original UE4 project.
When thinking about the project's beginning, it makes sense they chose UE4 over 5. I really appreciate the RT and HDR visuals in some games I've seen. I watched a player's video on his RTX 3090 for the new Spider-Man Remastered on PC, and it looked much more impressive than what I see on my own setup without an HDR display. It's reassuring that the RTX 3000 series GPUs have become significantly cheaper, and I'm hoping mining won't pick up again until I upgrade my system. Still, the prices haven't dropped as much as they usually do after a release. I'm aiming for something similar to an RTX 4080 when it becomes more affordable, around $700—feelings it's reasonable, though $100 more than what I spent on my current GPU. Everyone is curious about the upcoming 4000 series prices and availability. It's all speculation at the moment.
