Hello! This idea comes from another topic I’ve covered. So why do game or digital media companies focus more on fighting piracy? Or why don’t search engines stop piracy sites? Yes, there was a crackdown on PirateBay, but many other sites remain active. Also, what steps are publishers taking to stop piracy? Thanks!
Other garbage DRMs like U-play, Origin, and RSSC have effectively stopped pirates from accessing the internet.
They often struggle a lot when they attempt things. Similar to FC4 lacking a FOV slider on pirated copies. It was cracked quite easily at first. 2. because piracy isn't illegal everywhere and users must file complaints to Google, which I think helps remove it. For each removed link, ten more appear. It feels like a pointless battle.
since it doesn't perform well, the best option is to restrict access online at least until cracked servers become available. the only way to achieve this is by creating an online-only game, similar to Titanfall and the crew.
The issue of piracy's legality remains ambiguous. Several perspectives explain why people hold differing opinions on its legality: 1. Downloading is permissible as long as you don't attempt to profit from the material. 2. Only sharing is considered illegal, while downloading is fine regardless of purpose. 3. Having a copy allows piracy (e.g., owning the Avengers Blu-Ray means I can pirate a digital version). 4. Both uploading and downloading are strictly against the law no matter your intentions. 5. Uploading is fully acceptable—purchasing rights grants the freedom to distribute as you wish.
The issue involves two main challenges. Combating piracy creates an ongoing cycle of escalation with those who develop programs and distribute unauthorized content. Strict DRM can also frustrate users. If a program becomes unavailable, sales drop. The internet resembles a Hydra—removing one part spawns more. When major sites like Pirate Bay or Silk Road are taken down, new alternatives emerge. Publishers employ various strategies to curb piracy, each with its own approach. Some rely on legal action, while others improve distribution methods.
It's impossible to change that. However, there are more effective approaches to reduce its appeal. For instance, Steam has successfully implemented strategies such as discounts. It isn't flawless, but... as Gaben mentioned himself, PC sales have declined while game sales have grown significantly over the past decade.
1. varies by location
2. relies on your current position
3. ethical considerations don't apply here
4. simply to add some confusion
5. depends on where you find yourself
6. moral and legal standards aren't relevant
7. just for the sake of complexity
