I had to upgrade the BIOS on a Z170 board, and because one of my friends runs a 6700k in his setup, he let me borrow the chip to speed up the process. We turned off his machine, applied the new BIOS, and everything went well. But when I tried to reinstall the CPU, it wouldn’t boot and the memory indicator stayed on. After reinserting the RAM, it worked perfectly. I thought maybe the stick wasn’t properly seated, but when I checked his case, I saw the issue clearly.
My concern: What went wrong? He owns the original RAM, so he should be able to return it for a replacement. I’m wondering what could have caused the RAM to fail? Could the motherboard be defective? Might the power supply be faulty? He was thinking about upgrading to an i5 12400, but he planned to skip the motherboard, case, and cooler, just using everything except those parts. Should he worry about reusing any of these items? Or is it safe to resell the board as functional?
