The question about Monitor functionality with DVI-D cable is addressed.
I've been using a DVI-D cable with my monitor for a long time without major problems. I notice that occasionally, when the PC powers on, the screen would alternate between DVI and Analog for a short period before shutting down, displaying no "Press DEL or F2 to open BIOS" message. There is also no "No signal" display, and both the mouse and keyboard function properly. Sometimes I had to adjust the cables, and it would work again after a while. This issue first occurred during a power outage; I adjusted the extension cord, which seemed to resolve it at that time.
Recently, I installed an SSD to enable dual-booting Linux and Windows, and everything worked fine on both platforms. The problem began on Saturday while I was using Windows, and after restarting to switch to Linux, the same issue reappeared, though I couldn't fix it then.
I still have an old VGA cable from my previous setup that functions perfectly, but it's connected directly to the motherboard, preventing GPU use. I suspect this isn’t a GPU-related problem because I had no issues with it before, likely within a minute or so after switching to fresh Windows from a new SSD.
It makes me think the DVI-D cable might be the cause. There were no visible signs of damage, and both the GPU and monitor appear to connect correctly. Although I’m not sure about its significance, given my small room, this cable tends to bend (I’m not sure if that’s accurate).
I’ve been using it for five years now, so perhaps it’s time to replace it?
I attempted the following solutions:
- Reset the monitor settings to factory defaults.
- Power off the PC, disconnect it from power, and hold the start button for 30 seconds.
- Enable manual detection instead of automatic detection. I used both VGA and DVI cables simultaneously; VGA worked, but switching to DVI caused the screen to go black.
- Uninstalled GPU drivers via Display Driver Uninstaller on Windows.
- Frequently unplugged and plugged the DVI-D cable.
Testing a different cable is a solid next step. All the other troubleshooting attempts have been tried, so switching to another one seems reasonable. Good luck!
