I received this printer recently from my grandmother—it turns on but appears as a completely different device. I’m having trouble installing drivers, and in Device Manager it’s listed as HP EWS with an error.

You might want to test a P1105 driver. You can right-click and install drivers manually for the printer. Just scroll through the options. It’s likely a compatible driver for the entire P110x lineup.

Use the genuine HP drivers for your printer. Avoid checking third-party software.

HP typically uses a standard enterprise driver... which I’ve generally relied on, together with PS and PCL5 on print servers.

HP consumer printers typically need the HP Smart app and an internet link to operate correctly. It’s best to download that from the Microsoft Store and continue from there. I currently use Xerox for simple office printers because they function well with basic TCP/IP or USB connections and a fully equipped web interface. My home setup has an older HP model that doesn’t need this software, but over the past three years it’s become standard to expect such features from HP.

Consider beginning anew with these devices. Disconnect the USB port and remove all associated drivers from "Print Management." You can also open "Win+R," type "printui /s /t2," and delete them there. Restart the print spooler service if needed, since Windows may prevent uninstallation due to ongoing use. Reinstall the driver from the official source. Only connect the USB when prompted during installation; otherwise, the printer might reject it.

You might attempt to set up the driver yourself:
- Take the .exe file and unpack it using WinRAR or 7-Zip
- Launch the "UTIL" folder and run the utility tool
- Turn off the "HP Smart Install Utility" (it can be unreliable)
- Restart your printer and connect via USB
- Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers
- Select "Add a printer"
- Choose "Printer not listed" and pick "Local or network printer"
- Use the existing USB port
- Click "Have disk..." and look for your driver in the unpacked folder (search for .inf)
- Pick your model printer, proceed to "Next" and install
Don't worry, hope won't save you... Printers can sense fear and pressure.
