I own a Lexmark XS463de printer I inherited recently. It linked quickly over Ethernet to my PC. The computer recognized it immediately. I attempted to print this evening but Windows marked it as offline. I followed all the advice from Google without success. I removed the printer from Windows and restarted it, but now it doesn’t appear at all, making reinstallation impossible. My network setup is straightforward: Ethernet cable from printer to switch, switch connected to router, which in turn connects to my PC. It functioned properly for three months until this latest print attempt. The switch was working fine then. All lights are flashing. Could you offer any suggestions on how to get the printer back online? Thanks!

The distance between the printer and the computer is typically short, but it's often suggested to link them through USB for improved efficiency.

Occasionally, network printers receive a fresh IP address from the router, causing Windows to mark them as offline. I considered setting the printer's network card to a static IP using a default DCHP address (Page 163 of the manual).

I changed the switch to another one and it resolved the problem. Then I tried the original switch again, and it also detected the printer. It seems removing and reattaching the Ethernet cable helped. Any ideas about why this works and how to avoid it in the future? Thanks.

Hi. Yes, Ethernet does have limits on reliably connecting devices. Even with 50 ft cables, there are constraints that can affect performance over time.

Hi. So today this is again an issue. Windows Help suggested unplugging the printer for 30 seconds and rebooting the PC. This fixed the problem and the printer is back online for another month until it goes offline again. Google doesn't seem to know why this printer keeps going offline. Anyone have any other ideas as to why this happens so I can prevent future occurrences? Also, the user manual I got on Lexmark's site doesn't talk about IP addresses on page 163. Thanks.

Navigate through the printer menu to locate the Network Setup page and adjust the IP address from dhcp to a static one. Within this, identify the TCP/IP section. The guide for the x46x printers includes details on this in the "Understanding Printer Menus - Network Port Menu" for the X46x Series.

I'll attempt that. Appreciate the effort. However, I'm concerned about the effectiveness of using it for a month without an optimized IP address.

I don't understand your router's settings, but most devices refresh their DCHP addresses daily, while others might have longer intervals. If your printer is off, it may not respond to server pings to re-assign the IP. Once it wakes up, it treats it as a new connection and gives a different address. My Epson Workforce 740 did this every other day when I first connected it. After changing to a static address, there have been no issues.

So the manual isn't all that helpful. I can navigate to the 'IP address' and put something in. It's currently set for 192.168.2.23. I don't see an option to choose static vs a non static address. So I don't know if in a month that address would be different or the same. I would attach some images of the screens that I'm looking at however: when I click on this thread's picture icon it comes up with link insert instead. It says I can use CTRL P to attach an image however that just prints the page ????
