Hi, I see your PC has been running smoothly for a while but lately some games are lagging. You mentioned stable performance around 60-80fps, with drops to 40fps or lower in certain maps like Galactic Assault and especially Naboo. On Battlefield 5 you rarely hit above 60fps even on high settings. Other players with similar specs seem to get double the FPS. Your components are still functional, but it’s worth checking if upgrades could help. Your CPU is about three years old and your GPU is nearly a year old. Let me know what you think!

Here are a few points to consider. Your CPU is quite old, and the motherboard you mentioned isn't compatible with Intel processors. At least 8GB of DDR3 memory is the current baseline for gaming, but newer games will likely use it up fast.

I understand, my motherboard is B85 Pro4. I’ve thought about getting a new CPU, possibly a 9700k, but I’m unsure if it’s worth it or if it really makes a big difference. If I did switch CPUs, I’d also need to replace the motherboard.

Are you referring to the Z97M Pro 4? Please specify your display resolution and whether the CPU is boosted.

The issue is clear. Your CPU isn't compatible with the locked motherboard. You'll need a Z97 board, a solid cooler, and you should be able to push it over to around 4.6GHz or higher. Right now it's running at 4.8GHz.

On the B85 Pro4, as you mentioned, it's an older model. I'm running at 1920x1080 with 144hz. My CPU isn't overclocked, and my GPU is a bit overclocked, but I can't get it to perform much higher than around +80 MHz—it just crashes quickly.

CPU’s get hammered on online multiplayer games. Rendering all of the people moving around causes the CPU to become a bottleneck. However, I would still instal a monitoring program like MSI afterburner to double check that your cpu is the issue. Also I would wait until ryzen 2 reviews come out before you do a platform upgrade to the 9700k.

1920x1080 resolution at 144Hz, I often update my PC and currently have just one game on my SSD—Battlegrounds 2. In that game I’m using ultra settings, VSync disabled, and I just reinstalled the drivers yesterday without any changes.

Your CPU is definitely the main limiting factor, but unless you install a Z97 motherboard, you won't be able to push it further. Remember that improving the CPU also requires upgrading RAM and the motherboard itself. A 9700k might not be worth it now since the Ryzen 3000 series is just around. Consider purchasing a used Z97 board from eBay and getting a good cooler for the moment.

It seems your CPU is limiting your GPU performance by around 14%, and your game usage stays high—often between 80 to 90% utilization.
