I just upgraded my setup from an R5 2600+1660 Ti to a 5950X + 3060 configuration. The PC worked fine for about ten hours, but five minutes ago the RGB lights on the liquid cooler started flickering and the screen went dark. I quickly turned off the PSU (took roughly five seconds to see what was happening). However, after that, there was a burnt smell and visible smoke coming from the PSU. My 6-year-old PSU (Corsair 650W) failed two weeks ago, and I replaced it with another 650W unit from a local shop. Two weeks later, this happened again. A 650W should have been enough for this rig. Could my motherboard and CPU be damaged too? I plan to bring it to a friend’s PC shop tomorrow for inspection. I’m really frustrated right now and decided to post this thread to get opinions. I suspect the motherboard might be affected too, since the RGB lights flickered instead of cutting off immediately.

Where is it connected? Is the grounding solid? Are you switching to the new power cable (to the wall) for each fresh PSU? If I were you, I’d take back that original PSU to Corsair. They’d have sent you a new or refurbished unit—often looking just like new—that would probably function well. You might still be able to do that; their return policy is quite understanding. Your motherboard and CPU seem okay.

Thanks, I think the plug is properly grounded, but I’m not sure how to get back the Corsair PSU since I don’t recall the retailer anymore. I plan to purchase a new one tomorrow and just hope everything else is okay.

Visit Corsair's site and complete their return process. The item won't go back to the seller; it will be sent directly to Corsair.

Yes, I see you're using a non-Corsair power supply in your current setup.

You'll likely need to test the replacement PSU to confirm its condition. Could you share the model number or label from the failed unit? If unsure, a photo of the PSU's label would help identify it.
