The plastic catch was damaged a year ago, but it works fine now—it still fits my large 7900XTX model.

It’s just a small latch mechanism on the MSI card I own. There are two plastic arms attached to a spindle, plus one arm near the hole where it connects to the end of the spindle. The spindle section was secured and the arms need to move slightly so they can slide over the ends. It looks like a very basic and cheap design—the plastic gets weakened right after assembly when stretched. As for the problem, it’s probably not the latch itself. The slot is much more robust; removing the GPU usually requires force, and even then the PCI slots still function well after being reinserted by many people after rough handling during shipping.
