I am a professional video editor facing a persistent desktop issue. After installing a Ryzen 9 5900X in December 2022, I’ve encountered a recurring problem where certain applications cause my system to shut down completely and the fans to spin at maximum speed. The machine won’t restart unless I manually disconnect the power supply and reboot the whole setup. This has happened while using Adobe Premiere, the final level in Hitman 3, and after about 20 minutes of playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Only when I play the final level of Hitman 3 can I recreate this crash consistently. The other programs don’t trigger it. I’ve tried various troubleshooting steps: running single-core and multi-core bench tests, swapping the PSU with a Corsair RM850x, re-seating the CPU and RAM, updating BIOS and drivers, cleaning dust from the case, and even replacing the graphics card. Despite these efforts, the issue persists. I’m trying to identify the root cause so I can fix it or at least understand what’s going wrong. I’ve been monitoring temperatures closely—consistently around 80-85°C during heavy CPU use, and 44-54°C when idle. It seems overheating might be the culprit, but other games and software that I normally run without problems are more demanding than these three. I really need to get this resolved so I can work confidently on video editing again. Please share your insights!

The quickest and simplest solution is to format the OS drive and perform a clean Windows installation. This will eliminate all software problems, including bloatware and malware (except rootkits). Based on what seems to be the cause, it appears to be a software or driver conflict. Locating it is difficult, so wiping and starting over is the easiest and fastest approach. For extra security, avoid modifying your machine after a fresh setup. From a hardware standpoint, the problem might relate to your CPU, but diagnosing and replacing it would be challenging and costly.
Found my fix! It looks like the Ryzen 9’s “auto” setting in BIOS is set to automatically increase threads beyond the 3.7Gh mark. I saw it pushing 4.2 even when idle. Even without telling it to overclock, it was doing so and overheating under these single-thread applications. I forced it to stick at 3.7gh and it seems resolved now. Thanks Ryzen 😭
