My computer stopped working for a while. They told me the motherboard was faulty and I had to get it replaced. After the swap, it powers on but there’s no display. It might be related to the CPU or graphics card. While disassembling, the thermal paste looked worn out—about three to four months old. It’s not clear if I should replace the paste or if the issue lies elsewhere. When I checked the heat sink fan, one pin was broken, possibly causing the CPU to overheat. I applied a lot of thermal paste, but the fan still turned on, which suggests the motherboard is functioning properly.
What I’ve attempted so far:
- Swapped the GPU wire from the power supply.
- Removed and reinserted RAM.
- Tried different slot configurations.
- Used new HDMI cables, changed monitors, and switched from DVI to HDMI.
I’m considering removing the CPU and reinstalling it. Not sure if that would help. I’ll also try removing the motherboard battery and reinstalling.
What you can do:
- Check if the GPU wire is correctly connected.
- Ensure all connections are secure, especially the thermal paste.
- Verify the CPU is properly seated and not damaged.
- Consider testing with a different power supply or PSU.
- Consult the manual for your specific model regarding component replacement.
I’ll definitely look into a new option if it’s related to the CPU or GPU. When I removed the clips after the failure, the device broke. There’s a task I perform often that began causing delays and lag. I record screens via Obs and open around 200 Chrome tabs. Obs slows down when I start or stop it. Sometimes Chrome needs to be closed completely for Windows to function properly. There are two monitors—one HDMI and one DVI connected to the GPU. The DVI one stopped working, so I thought it was the cable I bought, but by the time it arrived, the PC had already failed. It was a hot week, and I never shut down the PC.
