The PC started up quickly from an SSD to a HDD.
I changed my HDD to an SSD several years back and left the drive connected after cloning. Everything worked until this morning. When I started my computer, it tried to boot from the HDD again and I'm confused about why. I initially assumed the issue was with a CMOS battery, so I replaced it, but now I can't get a boot from the SSD. The system says "Use a proper boot device" and in Disk Management it shows (Disk 0 is the SSD). I don’t want to initialize it because there are many important files there. I’m reaching out for advice from the community. Thanks for reading.
To use a portable operating system on your Samsung EVO 860 1TB drive, you'll need to transfer the data from the internal storage to an external SSD or USB drive. Then, install the desired portable OS onto that external device and follow the installation steps provided by the OS manufacturer.
Do you have a Windows setup on both the HDD and SSD? Typically, when you create a clone or fresh install to a new drive, it's best to connect only the bootable drive initially. Keep other drives until you reach the desktop, then shut down your PC and install the remaining drives. It’s also a good idea to format the previous drives to remove any old system files. My advice is to open Command Prompt as an administrator and run chkdsk: chkdsk (letter of the SSD): /f /r. Check if it reports any errors have been fixed.
Yes, you can inspect the details of a SATA port or drive. It helps to see which device is connected and its properties, including whether it's an SSD or HDD.
