The PC shuts down with a black screen under stress, and stops unexpectedly when starting up?
I'm experiencing some unusual problems with my system. Initially, I noticed crashes while playing the Battlefield 6 beta. During these crashes, the screen would go black and I had to press the power button to shut down the PC. I suspected a power-related issue, so I performed a power test using OCCT, which consistently reproduced the crashing after a short period. I attempted to fix it by undervolting the GPU, which resolved the problem in the test environment.
However, after that, I began encountering boot issues. The system would randomly hang during startup, sometimes displaying a red solid CPU light and an orange VRAM light on the motherboard, other times showing a green Boot light. Occasionally it would pass through these stages but get stuck at the solig green Boot light. After several resets, it eventually booted correctly.
I initially thought the problem was with my power supply unit (PSU), but I borrowed another one for testing and still faced similar crashes during OCCT power tests and boot issues. It seems the issue occurred less often with the borrowed PSU, though this might just be a coincidence.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! I believed the problem was my PSU, but I borrowed another one for testing and still faced the same crashes during OCCT power testing and similar boot issues. It seems these occurrences happened less often with the borrowed unit, though that could just be luck.
Could you share the make and model of the PSU you used to diagnose your current system?
Motherboard: ASRock X870 STEEL LEGEND WIFI
BIOS version for your motherboard?
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
That combination is problematic, as ASRock boards can harm an X3D SKU.
How are you keeping the processor cool?
GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 3070 Ti OC
What driver version are you using?
The borrowed PSU is an older Corsair AX860i. It's quite old, and it might share the same problems as my current PSU. BIOS version is 3.25. I've noticed issues with ASRock motherboards and the 9800X3D. Could CPU degradation be causing these problems? How can I test for it? The CPU cooler is the Noctua NH-D15, and I'm nearing 95°C during the power test—should it still function properly? The GPU driver is 577.00.
