The PC shuts down with a black screen and then restarts unexpectedly.
Hi,
my PC has been functioning normally until recently, about 2-3 days ago. Then it began displaying a black screen across both displays, with the mouse and keyboard lights turning off and the system rebooting after roughly 30 to 90 seconds. After rebooting, the screen remains black and it keeps restarting every minute or so.
When I power it off using the power button and then turn it back on, the situation varies: sometimes it works properly, other times it stays completely black. Additionally, once it starts working again, it quickly goes back to a black screen within a short period (though if I wait a bit longer, it stays on).
Another issue that has appeared recently (about a week ago) is that when waking up from sleep mode, the fans often start spinning without any noticeable activity, and the screen remains dark. This happens unpredictably—sometimes during gameplay, other times when nothing is happening. I ran stress tests on the CPU and GPU, and everything functioned normally even under heavy load. However, during these tests, the GPU's power dropped from 110% to 90-100%, then to 30% after a brief stutter.
Here’s my setup:
- CPU: i5 10500
- GPU: RTX 3060
- Motherboard: Asus TUF gaming B460-plus
- Cooler: Cooler Master X Dream i117 (low-profile, changed last week)
- RAM: Corsair 2x8GB at 3000MHz
- Power Supply: Corsair TX650M 80 Plus Gold
- Storage: Sabrent NVME 1GB PCIe 4.0 with SanDisk SSD and a 4 HDD
What might be the cause?
EDIT:
It seems to occur consistently whenever I run a stress test for more than a minute, but not during the test (even if I run it for 10-15 minutes). However, it happens about 2-3 seconds after stopping. During these tests, the CPU light on the motherboard turns on. This also happens when I power on the PC and immediately see a black screen without any beep.
Stress testing without the GPU or using the built-in one doesn’t result in black screens. I attempted to disconnect all HDDs and one RAM stick to reduce the load on the PSU, but the issue persists.
I’ve tried removing the storage drives to lessen the strain on the power supply, but it still leads to a black screen. The more tests I perform, the more confused I become.
Cooler: Cooler Master X Dream i117 is a compact model; I decided to mention it since I switched from the original cooler last week.
You didn't really upgrade your cooler with this purchase, so sticking with the stock option might be better.

How recent is the PSU?

What BIOS version are you using for your motherboard?
You could attempt reinstalling GPU drivers by running DDU to clear all drivers in Safe Mode, then manually reinstall from the latest Nvidia driver source on an elevated command—Right click installer > Run as Administrator.
