The PC shuts down unexpectedly until it is restarted?
Hello,
I recently upgraded my CPUs and performed a thorough reset to refresh everything. However, I’m now facing problems that are really puzzling me. While using the PC—especially for gaming—I notice a loss of display signal, and the fans are still running as if nothing is wrong. The only solution to restore video is to power off and then turn it back on. Before the CPU upgrade, my PC was functioning perfectly without any issues, but now it feels off, particularly with the display problem.
My previous setup:
- AMD 9800x3d (with Noctua NH-D15)
- Asus Crosshair 870e Hero
- Corsair 64GB 6000MHz
- MSI 4090 Liquid Suprim
- Corsair RM1000w
- Crucial 705 Gen5 1TB
- Crucial 705 Gen5 4TB
- WB Gen4 8TB
- Toshiba 22TB
My new setup:
- AMD 9950x3d (delidded with TG Liquid Metal + TG Heatspreader + Artic Freezer III 240mm)
- Asus Crosshair 870e Hero
- Corsair 64GB 6000MHz
- MSI 4090 Liquid Suprim (refreshed with new pads and paste)
- Corsair RM1000w
- Crucial 705 Gen5 1TB
- Crucial 705 Gen5 4TB
- WB Gen4 8TB
- Toshiba 22TB
I’d like to recall that when I refreshed the 4090, I initially used liquid metal. I applied two layers of TG Shield around the board to prevent short circuits and ensure safety. After reassembly, my first boot failed—my GPU wasn’t detected and the fans weren’t spinning. I had to reattach the GPU and cables, but the fans still didn’t start. Later, I tried connecting via the motherboard display and booted into Windows using Cinabench. After rebooting with the GPU again, I still didn’t see a display.
I then reset the CMOS and attempted to boot normally. This time, I saw the first ROG logo, then lost display until I powered off and turned it back on. This issue appeared with both the GPU and the motherboard display. I performed a BIOS flashback, which allowed me to boot into Windows through the motherboard display.
I’ve updated the BIOS, reinstalled all motherboard drivers, and NVIDIA drivers. I’m considering removing the NVIDIA driver completely to install an older version, fearing it might damage the GPU. Still, I’m hopeful it’s not the cause. Could be something else is at play?
Please help =(
Hi, I didn't actually wash the GPU, but I thoroughly cleaned the dye and heatspreader (where it was applied) along with everything nearby using isopropyl alcohol and TG Remover several times. I tried my best to check the GPU for any remaining residue. If you believe this is the cause and nothing else, I can remove it again and clean it properly.
Only disassembling and reassembling is possible at the moment. Applying pressure while tightening screws might be excessive, or residues from the re-pasting could be an issue. You may also consider sending it back for replacement.
Are you certain the card has been replaced and there’s nothing else at fault? I feel like there’s little else I can do with it. I reworked and reassembled it again, double-checking all the screws—everything seems fine to me. I also ran stress tests on the card multiple times and it performed perfectly. Yesterday I played all day without any problems, but today I encountered the black screen again. Interestingly, it only occurs when playing a single game.
I just assumed the PSU might be failing and cleaned the card once more. Still experiencing random signal loss during gameplay. YES! Even when in black screen, the fans spin quickly. I’ll reinstall the driver again using DDU. Should I revert to the previous driver version or install the latest one? Thanks!
I believe it was the driver. I checked and everything looks fine now. Thanks a lot for your assistance! =)
