The PC shuts down unexpectedly during high GPU usage.
Hello everyone, recently my computer has been shutting down unexpectedly while I play games. It happens instantly sometimes, or after a few minutes, and rarely at all—same game, not too demanding. My setup includes an I7-6700 non-K, GAH170 gaming, 3 Rog RTX 2080, 1x16GB DDR4, 2400MHz CL17, 700W PSU, Cougar CMX 80 Plus Bronze. I attempted to roll back Windows updates and the GForce driver, but nothing helped. My machine isn’t dirty, and Windows isn’t creating a dump file either. Temperature seems fine—often it restarts around 60°C or lower. The only issue shown is in Event Viewer with a keyword error. I searched online and tried fixes like Fast Startup and Microsoft Visual, but results were the same. When running a stress test with OCCT, CPU tests pass but GPU causes immediate shutdowns. Same with Furmark. Is the problem with the GPU or the PSU? (GPU is 10 months old, no OC, PSU is 5 years old.) Edit: it was the PSU.
I’ll estimate the memory based on what’s available. Since PSU is used, it probably doesn’t affect GPU memory directly. The GPU still has its own storage.
I think the issue might be with the power supply, as it seems to lack the necessary power for the card. Grab mentioned that Cougar isn't a good quality PSU. I'd replace it with a 750W Corsair or Seasonic model rated for 80+ Bronze. A PSU is significantly more affordable than a video card.
It was fine last month, whether it was the same game or something tougher. Memtest confirmed it. Probably time to swap the PSU and check.
