I'm just starting out with posting on forums and everything feels a bit confusing at first. My computer would randomly freeze in bluescreening mode, then shut down and try to restart. Even during those times, if it was off trying to boot, it would freeze on the loading screen, restart, and repeat until it recovered. Often I can't even get it to start up normally and have to format the drive with a USB to reinstall Windows. Usually the installation works, but then I run into driver issues and end up with a black screen or BSOD. I remember all my BIOS settings were set to defaults, so I've been trying to adjust RAM speed and voltage. I built this PC in 2020 with these specs:
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WiFi
RAM: 2x8 HyperX Gskill 3600MHz
GPU: ASUS ROG Strix Radeon RX 5500 XT
SSD: Samsung 970 Pro Evo (I think)
PSU: ASUS ROG Strix 550 Watt Gold
Recently I switched to a Ryzen 5 5600X, but the only changes from my list are that I now have an MSI B550 Tomahawk Max WiFi. I spoke to some people at Geeksquad at Best Buy and they thought it was probably the motherboard or CPU, but now it doesn’t seem that way. I’m considering swapping in a new CPU into a new motherboard, though I haven’t because I planned to return one for money. I might try tomorrow.

Anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong here? And if anyone has advice or knows if I should avoid posting on this forum, please let me know.

Hello there! Could you share the details about your replacement power supply unit? What brand and model did you get? Was it installed recently or is it an older unit? Also, let me know about your CPU setup.

I'm planning to mention a failing power supply. I'll test it first so it doesn't cause more damage later.

Sorry I didn't notice any responses even after several checks. It was the most affordable option I could find at Best Buy, so it wasn't ideal, but I thought it would function properly once installed.

Are there any chains or locations you could check to test the PSU? I also read about using a paper clip on the 16th and 17th pin of the 24-pin cable to see if fans respond. Would that really indicate an issue beyond just power delivery?

The paperclip test mainly confirms whether the PSU can run its own internal fan, which is essentially the only information it provides. It serves more as a check to ensure the PSU isn't in a failed state.
