Yesterday it operated fine, but today when I attempted to power it up, the fans started but there was no display and the mouse and keyboard remained off. I tried several steps:
- Disconnecting the CMOS battery for 5 minutes before reattaching it
- Replacing the RAM modules and using just one stick of RAM
- Fully taking apart and reassembling the motherboard with only one RAM stick and CPU installed
In every attempt, the fans would spin occasionally but no display appeared, and the mouse/keyboard never lit up. Sometimes after restarting a few times or waiting a bit, the screen would briefly appear for 5–10 seconds before disappearing completely—then the fans would resume spinning without a display.
This pattern happens about 95% of the time. I’m hoping someone can help me with this issue on my machine (I5-2400 | 1060 3GB | Barracuda 1TB | ThinkCenter M81 | 500W PSU).
It seems like you're having trouble with the phrasing. Maybe your idea is that the motherboard could be malfunctioning?
I don’t have any extra cables, but I brought the computer to a tech store. They checked the GPU and RAM in another machine and everything worked. It looks like the issue might be with the motherboard. I’m not sure what to do next.
No problem! That makes sense too—I wonder why it keeps coming back even when it seems broken. It’s strange, but it works sometimes and looks like it’s ready to go again. It’s a budget motherboard, but I don’t have the funds for a full CPU+board+ram upgrade.
I recall getting a chromebook and something occurred. Avoid testing it with the GPU.
