Back in April I assembled a new gaming PC using more contemporary parts, still relying on the same 650W power supply from my previous unit, thinking it would suffice just enough. The system performed perfectly at first, but recently I purchased both a new NVME SSD and a replacement power supply, deciding to upgrade proactively. I switched to an EVGA 850 G5 PSU and installed Windows 11 soon after.

Since installing those components, I've encountered some problems. While gaming, the fans would unexpectedly surge to full speed for up to 30 seconds before settling back down. This issue was resolved using fan control software. However, about a week ago I noticed my entire PC would restart during gameplay, regardless of whether the software was running.

From what I've learned, this seems linked to either CPU overheating or insufficient power. I’ve confirmed the CPU isn’t the cause by stress testing it to high temperatures and seeing no issues. The PSU is actually 200W more powerful than before, yet it didn’t trigger this problem. Also, the game I’ve been playing recently—Persona 5 Royal—is not particularly demanding on hardware.

At this stage, the only certainty is that I may have acquired a faulty power supply. I’m still unsure and would appreciate any outside advice or opinions before considering a warranty claim.

Semi modular or completely modular? In any case, it performs better than the EVGA G5. The main drawback of the Cooler Master model is the presence of just one daisy-chained PCI-e cable.

It's a bit of a mixed situation—this semi-modular design seems to offer advantages over the newer version, though the exact reasons are unclear. The new model appears to have some issues that are making this unit preferable in certain contexts.

The Cooler Master offers a superior platform using an LLC resonant converter, which is technically more effective than the FSP with ACRF topology in the G5. ACRF faces challenges with the newest video cards due to its limited transient response time.

How to find that specification when purchasing a new power supply is unclear.
