The PC gradually ceases to react upon being idle?
Hi all,
I recently upgraded my computer and have noticed some unusual behavior. It functions properly during gaming, but when I'm just browsing videos or using the browser, it becomes unresponsive and freezes gradually. Initially, the video stops, but sometimes the audio stays on while I can still move the mouse and close the browser, though I can't reopen it. The Task Manager shows no activity from any program, and restarting the PC or opening applications doesn't resolve the issue. It remains stuck for a few minutes before the mouse cursor stops moving. I have to manually restart the computer, which happens randomly after about 2-3 hours of inactivity.
Setup details:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600
Memory - Gygabite B450M S2H
GPU - RX 6600
RAM - G.SKILL Aegis 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200MHz
Power Supply - ATX Seasonic B12 BC Series 650W 80 Plus Bronze
During the upgrade, I changed the CPU and GPU while installing a clean Windows. So far, I've tried cleaning and reinstalling the GPU driver, updating the motherboard BIOS, adjusting power settings, and switching my second monitor from HDMI to DP like the main screen. All temperatures are normal, and the issue seems more frequent when the PC is idle. If anyone has encountered this problem, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
With clean windows install. Where did you obtain the installer for the operating system? If you're using Windows 10 or 11, which version (not edition) are you currently using? Update the motherboard BIOS. What BIOS version are you running at this time? So far I have cleaned and reinstalled the GPU driver using DDU. If not, I removed all GPU drivers (Intel, Nvidia, AMD) via DDU, then manually reinstalled the latest driver from AMD's support site. Executed with elevated privileges, for example by right-clicking the installer and selecting Run as Administrator. How is your processor being cooled? What is the case model? How many fans are there, and what is their orientation?
The installation was completed using a USB drive I previously made, from the Microsoft site, running Windows 10 Pro version 22H2. Mobo was installed with the latest BIOS from site F65b. I removed the drivers with DDU and reinstalled following these instructions. The cooler included with the CPU is Wraith Stealth, mounted on a Zalman T7 ATX with one rear fan and two front fans. CPU temperatures reported by HWMonitor stay below 45°C during idle, and no overclocking was performed.
