After roughly two weeks with the DK2, I can only say it completely transformed the experience. It felt like watching a 3D film but with a much stronger impact. I didn’t try SC because it doesn’t work with the DK2, but Elite Dangerous is something that really amazed me. The sensation of being in space is hard to put into words. The sense of scale and depth is incredible. The same applies to DCS World—being in the cockpit was truly immersive. My take is definitely yes, it’s essential.
It's quite challenging. Before switching, I was using ED at 2560x1080 with maximum performance. With Rift I'm currently at 1920x1080 and the lowest graphics options. I had to make significant adjustments to reach 75 fps. Otherwise, the video becomes slightly unstable and after about 30 minutes I start feeling unwell. Another point is that with Rift's graphics settings, they're becoming less noticeable. The real enjoyment comes from immersing in the game, so those small visual effects matter less. With the high-resolution consumer version, I worry that powerful systems will need to be built to run it smoothly. At this stage, I'm willing to do anything to get it working on an Oculus.
I got mine a couple of weeks ago and it's really interesting. From my perspective, first-person shooting isn't great due to simulator sickness and the constant head movement feels exhausting, especially in games with lots of vertical action. It works fine for short sessions but longer play feels annoying. The less realistic the graphics, the better I find it—Quake 1 was easier than Half-life 2 and Tuscany probably because it felt more natural. I get why they're focusing on seated experiences now. Cockpit and third-person views are solid, and once developers clarify their direction, it makes more sense to my mind. Most of the action stays forward, which helps. Vanguard V and Titans of Space were amazing, but I think they'll be worth it only with a 4K display. They already show promise at 1080p. TLDR; Not quite yet.
